Was Hawking an atheist? Atheists don't believe in God. Hawking had said multiple times he didn't believe in God. Does that make the recently-died astrophysicist an atheist? No, it does not. What? Am I insane? He was notorious among the religious community including Christians and Muslims for uttering blasphemous remarks regarding God. He openly admitted his doubts and publicly declared his disbelief in the existence of an omnipotent almighty deity. He said he was an atheist. Did he tell me in secret that he believed in God? No, Hawking believed he was an atheist. I think he was mistaken. I also think he was an idiot when he called himself an atheist. Simply because you think you're an atheist, doesn't make you one. You think this is a stupid comment. Well, let me prove to you that Hawking was not an atheist even he died still hating the very idea of a "God".

The reason why I think Hawking was not an atheist is because the entity he rejected was not God. Yes, you heard it right. The "God" he rejected is not the God we worship. It is just like assuming that UFOs are angels (I can provide you the name of the Urdu pseudo-scientists who wrote that down in his book) and then rejecting the existence of angels. Similarly, a man thinks that his wife cheated on him and then he forgives her. His forgiveness is meaningless because his wife has remained faithful. You cannot accept/reject something you are mistaken about. Hawking rejected the God he thought we believed - and by "we" I mean the theist community of the world, specially the Muslims - so, if we prove that the God Hawking hated is not the God we worship then, by default, Hawking becomes not an atheist. Still find it all confusing? Don't sweat. Let me explain what kind of "God" Hawking believed in and later rejected.

Have you ever heard of Zeus? He was worshiped in ancient Greece. The Olympic games were established for his entertainment - though we know he never enjoyed them because he never existed. Greeks believed that he ruled the heavens and thunder was his gesture of might. Just watch Percy Jackson. Zeus killed his father, married his sister and raped a woman named Europa, a crime for which he was banished by the divine community. He had a son named Hercules who was the legendary Greek superhero. Zeus was the influence behind the Roman arch-deity Jupiter or Juno. So are these fictional characters worthy of the holy title of "God"? Will you worship them? Do they satisfy you need to have an omnipotent supreme being supervising your every public/private action? A god who was born sexually and then he kills his father to become the greatest god ever? In short, do you think Zeus or Juno were even good beings? I believe you will shiver at the very idea of a rapist being the master of the universe.

If you hate the character of Zeus then you might find it interesting how he looked like. He was a bald old man with a long beard. His hair and clothes were white in color and he lived upon a cloud kingdom. Sounds familiar? It is the same portrait of the modern Christian god or the Father. Just watch Family Guy. So the idea of God being and acting like a human being is detestable. A God who has all the bad habits of a mortal is worthy of rejection. This is the God Hawking rejected. That is exactly what the biblical and Islamic prophets have been doing since the evolution of mankind. Bible and Qur'an are filled with stories of prophets forbidding people from worshiping such mortal deities. The God we deserve is immortal. The God we deserve is the one Hawking was never introduced with.

Just read the many stories regarding God in Bible, Sahih al-Bukhari and non-Vedic Hindu scriptures. We have gods who are jealous, torture innocent people, feel sorry for their actions, punish people for the sins of their forefathers, have physical appearances, make people worship them by stripping, throw these feet in the hellfire, fly away with someone's fiance, are cursed by someone's mother, engage in contests to prove who is better and cannot tell good from evil when have their third eye working. These are the gods Hawking refused to worship and these are the gods all sane people should refuse to acknowledge as their masters. The God we deserve does not exist physically. He never appears as a human being on earth. He cannot be seen. He does not need eyes or see, ears to hear, hands of build, feet to walk or heart of love. He exists everywhere at the same time. The best discussion on God can be found in the works of Sharif al-Radi who compiled 400+ sermons and letters of Ali ibn Abu Talib (599?-661 AD) in an encyclopedia called Nahj al-Balaghah. The Four Vedas also offer a very profound view of God. The actual Hindu idea of God is very much similar to Islam i.e. Hindu rishis used to preach the existence of a spirit that has always existed and will keep always existing. If Hawking had embraced Hinduism, he would have changed his mind regarding "atheism".

He is Powerful, such that when imagination shoots its arrows to comprehend the extremity of His power, and mind, making itself free of the dangers of evil thoughts, tries to find Him in the depth of His realm, and hearts long to grasp realities of His attributes and openings of intelligence penetrate beyond description in order to secure knowledge about His Being, crossing the dark pitfalls of the unknown and concentrating towards Him He would turn them back. They would return defeated admitting that the reality of His knowledge cannot be comprehended by such random efforts, nor can an iota of the sublimity of His Honor enter the understanding of thinkers.
